Abstract

Beyond Light: Towards a Geography of Darkness

In contemporary geographical debate, light has frequently been understood as a device of security, heritage enhancement, and territorial control. By contrast, darkness has often been relegated to a mere absence or, more generally, to a negative condition to be concealed. This contribution proposes a conceptualization of the geography of darkness, interpreting it as an active space capable of encouraging social and territorial practices. Through a cross-cutting geographical approach, the article identifies five analytical dimensions of darkness, showing how it represents a useful interpretative category for understanding the transformations of contemporary territories.
